The All English Tie… Ugh.
The first few all-English Champions League ties were interesting as the top Premier League sides started making their way to the final stages with regularity. But lately I’m sick of it. I’d like to see something in Europe that I won’t see every week anyway, and I miss the days of Milan and Bayern showing the clumsy English sides how their unsophisticated football would never win them a European trophy. The complete inability for an English side to win Europe’s biggest trophy meant that the competition was even more a symbol of greatness for any club. Something only the very best could aspire to win.
But now England’s teams are breezing through now with barely a hiccup, and battling each other for the right to reach the final and face… each other? It’s all very odd.
Chelsea-Liverpool tends to be my least favourite clash as, while both can be entertaining, when they face each other they tend to recede into a tactical shell of doom, waiting for the other to make a mistake. While Jose used to spice things up through sheer force of personality, Guus is boring as tits and Rafa only brings out his mad side when Fergie is sniffing about.
So pray with me. Pray to Jeebus for an early goal.
