If it’s not one hairless freak, it’s another. Why have bald refs become so utterly crap? Collina was virtually flawless but his successors are all steaming piles. Howard Webb is usually half decent, too, but that challenge never looked a penalty from the moment the ball spun out sideways from Carrick’s feet. Bottled it completely. Before Spurs fans feel too aggrieved, Webb also failed to send Wilson Palacios off for a mental two footed lunge early in the game.

It’s a shame for United, Sir Alex that these sorts of things are overshadowing what should be a story about a tremendous fightback and an utter capitulation by Spurs. But it’s too easy for rival fans to point at the baldies with the whistles and make excuses.
