If you are going to watch Watchmen, I would strongly advise you read the graphic novel first. It will increase your enjoyment of the film from “WTF???” to “That was pretty cool”, and help you understand a few other things too.

Alan Moore’s original masterpiece inspired the next two decades worth of comic creators and, while the movie is understandably a different beast altogether, it is already flicking the creative switch in a whole host of new people as parodies and gag humour ensure the film has entered the public consiousness. That, and a few gazillion bucks worth of marketing.

My take on the film?

- If you did not read the book, you will hate it.
- If you expect an accurate capture of why the book is so great, you will hate it.
- If you expect an X-men-like action romp, you will hate it.

But if you just want to see some scenes from the novel executed really well in live-action glory, then you will enjoy yourself as I did.

I’m seeing it again this week and will be watching in more of a geek mode, and will probably find a billion holes. But there are loads of boobies in it so that’s something to look forward to at least.
